April 12, 2020

Hello and welcome to our "Drive-in" Church service, it's good to have you here and good that we are able to find a way to gather at this time.  Please be sure to stay in your cars so we maintain social distancing protocols.  After service is over there will be ushers at the parking lot exits with offering plates if you would like to give an offering.  When service is over please be patient as you leave the parking lot as it may take some time.

WELCOME and GREETINGS OF PEACE

OPENING HYMN:   “Jesus Christ Is Risen Today”

Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia!
Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia!
Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia!
Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia!

Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia!
Unto Christ, our heav’nly king, Alleluia!
Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia!
Sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia!

But the pains which he endured, Alleluia!
Our salvation have procured; Alleluia!
Now above the sky he’s king, Alleluia!
Where the angels ever sing. Alleluia!

Sing we to our God above, Alleluia!
Praise eternal as his love; Alleluia!
Praise him, all you heav’nly host, Alleluia!
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia!

INVOCATION and OPENING SENTENCES

Pastor:       In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People:      Amen

Pastor:       This is the day that the Lord has made;

People:      let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Pastor:       Christ has risen from the dead. Alleluia!

People:      God the Father has crowned Him with glory and honor,

Pastor:       He has given Him dominion over the works of His hands;

People:      He has put all things under His feet. Alleluia! Alleluia!

OUR JOURNEY TO THE TOMB:  A Time of Confession and Resurrection

Pastor:       People of God, why do you seek the living among the dead?

People:      Because we have nowhere else to go.  He had told us that He is the way, the truth and the life.

Pastor:       People of God, why do you seek the living among the dead?

People:      Because we live in a world that still suffers from wars and hunger, cruelty and bloodshed.  Because families are torn apart by greed or death or selfishness.  Because individual lives deny or ignore or mock God.

Pastor:       People of God, approach the tomb!  Await the dawn of a new age!  Seek the miracle of new life!  People of God, why do you seek the living among the dead?

People:      We come because we long for hope in the midst of grief.  We come because we remember His words of resurrection and life and hope and victory.

Pastor:       People of God, do not live in death.  Do not let sin be your master.  Let your hopes be made new again for Jesus Christ has risen to forgive you.  He has risen to save you.  He has risen to give you life.  People of God, today I bring you a message of hope!  He is not here.  He is risen!

People:      Yes the tomb is empty.  He is risen!

Pastor:       He is risen!

People:      And He is among us!

Pastor:       Alleluia!

People:      Alleluia!

Pastor:       He is risen!

People:      He is risen indeed!

SALUTATION

Pastor:       The Lord be with you.

People:      And also with you.

Pastor:       Let us pray.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Pastor:       God of mercy, Your love for us is so deep that Your Son gave His life in our place on the cross. We are forgiven through the blood of Jesus. Lead us to love You with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

People:      Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT READING:   Acts 10:34-43

Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism 35 but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right. 36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. 37 You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached— 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. 39 “We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross, 40 but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. 41 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

Reader:     This is the Word of the Lord.

People:      Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE LESSON:                         Colossians 3:1-4

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Reader:     This is the Word of the Lord.

People:      Thanks be to God.

RESPONSIVE PSALM:                  Psalm 16

Pastor:       Preserve me, O God, for in You I take refuge.

People:      I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from You.”

Pastor:       As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight.

People:      The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips.

All:            For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let Your holy one see corruption.

Pastor:       The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; You hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

People:      I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me.

Pastor:       I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

People:      Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure.

All:            For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let Your holy one see corruption.

Pastor:       You make known to me the path of life; in Your presence there is fullness of joy;

People:      at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

                  I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

            And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary; Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

HOLY GOSPEL:                              Matthew 28:1-10

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.” So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

Pastor:       This is the Gospel of Our Lord.

People:     Praise to You, O Christ

SERMON HYMN:   “He’s Risen, He’s Risen”

He’s risen, he’s risen, Christ Jesus, the Lord;
He opened death’s prison, the incarnate, true Word.
Break forth, hosts of heaven, in jubilant song
And earth, sea, and mountain their praises prolong.

The foe was triumphant when on Calvary
The Lord of creation was nailed to the tree.
In Satan’s domain did the hosts shout and jeer,
For Jesus was slain, whom the evil ones fear.

But short was their triumph, the Savior arose,
And death, hell, and Satan He vanquished, His foes.
The conquering Lord lifts His banner on high;
He lives, yes, He lives, and will nevermore die.

O,where is your sting, death? We fear you no more;
Christ rose, and now open is fair Eden’s door.
For all our transgressions His blood does atone;
Redeemed and forgiven, we now are His own.

Then sing your hosannas and raise your glad voice;
Proclaim the blest tidings that all may rejoice.
Laud, honor, and praise to the Lamb that was slain;

With Father and Spirit He ever shall reign.

SERMON:   Echoes of Easter

PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven,

hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth

as it is in heaven;

give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom

and the power and the glory

forever and ever. Amen.

BENEDICTION

Pastor:       The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The Lord look upon you with favor and X give you peace.

People:      Amen.

CLOSING HYMN:   “Now All the Vault of Heaven Resounds”

Now all the vault of heav’n resounds

In praise of love that still abounds:

“Christ has triumphed! He is living!”

Sing, choirs of angels, loud and clear!

Repeat their song of glory here:

“Christ has triumphed! Christ has triumphed!”

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Eternal is the gift He brings,

Therefore our heart with rapture sings:

“Christ has triumphed! He is living!”

Now still He comes to give us life

And by His presence stills all strife.

“Christ has triumphed! He is living!”

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

O fill us, Lord, with dauntless love;

Set heart and will on things above

That we conquer through Your triumph;

Grant grace sufficient for life’s day

That by our lives we truly say:

“Christ has triumphed! He is living!”

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Adoring praises now we bring

And with the heav’nly blessed sing:

“Christ has triumphed!  Alleluia!”

Be to the Father and our Lord,

To Spirit blest, most holy God,

All the glory never ending!

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
